Hi everyone.
I am extremely sorry to let you all know that on 30 January 2026, my partner Maddie, also known here as Chacapoya, died aged 28. It was sudden and unexpected, and I will love her and miss her terribly for the rest of my life. NationStates was where we met, back when I joined in 2021, and I will forever be grateful to this game for bringing her into my life.

Maddie was an active member of the community here for several years. In her home region of Refugia, she held the longest continuous residency (a fact of which she was very proud) and multiple council positions over the years. She was a cornerstone of that region, hosting game nights, events and being a friendly and welcoming face with exactly the right amount of healthy shitoko that an Ops Councillor needs. She was also active as an indie merc in the R/D sphere, notably winning Indie of the Year in 2025 and was known for her speed despite a disability which affected the use of her hands. She was invited to the Disability Symposium hosted by Europeia last May, where she spoke on her experiences as a disabled player on NationStates, and I was proud to watch her do so.

Maddie also created the Starlight Brigade, which was her baby, and she was very proud of how it was consistently the best single-region faction every N-Day. I know that Refugia will make her very proud for N-Days to come. For a while, she was also an active member of the cards community, and as of writing is still in the top 400 nations for International Artwork. She was also a prolific worldbuilder and created a wonderful species called "Flits", unique in that they are both the inhabitants and the currency of Chacapoya. Those of you who were lucky enough to RP with her over the years will know she was a fantastic writer and artist, and her flag is a wonderful pixel animation she drew herself for the S4 cards release.

NationStates was a place where she had many friends and fond memories, and I am grateful to you all for that. Those of you who knew her well will remember her wonderful taste in music, games and most of all her absolutely fantastic sense of humour and quick wit which got her quoted and pinned in many of the servers she was in.

She had given me the password to Chacapoya several times over the past few years, so although Chacapoya will not be active, I will be logging in occasionally to ensure it doesn’t CTE.

At some point when I have adjusted somewhat to functioning more, a memorial event open to anyone who would like to remember and celebrate her will be planned here on NationStates. I’ll keep you all updated as to what that is when I’ve decided more.
