Even if it's not "open source" you have the entire source code available since Xenforo is a php program so it's not really restrictive. The problem is a lack of documentation and trying to figure out what's what. Nobody would use a phpBB forum anyways and it's completely stuck 20 years ago. You can modify it but at that point why not just use Xenforo instead?
