Do you see a black dot/line near the pain? If not, rub your finger over the spot and see if you feel anything. I doubt it's fully covered in skin, because you'd probably have noticed the pain before that happened.
Ive also just had a sharp pain when I step that wasnt caused by a splinter and just went away, so who knows
