Well keep in mind these are the people who grow up as well as die in the same town, or a town not that far away, get married to a high school sweetheart, have a few kids, those kids grow up and have kids of their own, and so the cycle repeats.
It's not so much that they're actually 'conservative' even though they'd argue that they are, but they're so about the status quo and keeping things they way they are, the way they grew up.
It's ironic because they champion Ben Shapiro's infamous phrase "facts, not feelings" but what they operate on is just a form of nostalgia, a feeling.

Also, I call bullshit on the depression, who wouldn't be depressed to live in this day and age? Everything's so fucking stagnant apart from the evolution of technology. Most people aren't going to look back on their 20s and 30s as a 'glorious' time since the world will look exactly the same when they're 50. Same culture. Same culture war. Same politics. Same attitude. Same media, but rebooted a several dozen times since then.
Even the youth subcultures now are a retread of previous attire, like the revitalization of scene and emo, then in 2030 you're going to see the revival of hipsters and Portlandia, and it's going to be a hellish cycle of groundhog day for the rest of your fucking existence.
